Why Drill Count Decides Everything

A diamond painting is built from thousands of identical resin drills, each one a single flat colour placed on one cell of an adhesive canvas. There is no blending — a drill is one colour and that is that. So the palette size you choose here is literally the number of drill colours you will need to buy and sort.

Can this replace a proper diamond painting kit?

Not on its own. It produces the numbered colour chart, which is the design half. A real kit also needs an adhesive canvas printed with that chart, the resin drills themselves in matching colours, and the tools. Use this to plan and preview before committing to a kit.

How many drill colours should I use?

Twenty to forty for most photographs. Fewer and faces flatten out; more and you spend most of the project sorting drills for a difference nobody sees from across a room. Match the number to the drill set you actually own.

What is the difference between this and paint by numbers?

The design step is nearly identical — both reduce a photo to numbered regions of flat colour. The execution differs entirely. Diamond painting places pre-coloured resin drills onto adhesive with tweezers; paint by numbers applies acrylic with a brush. Diamond work is more repetitive; painting gives more control over the finish.
